A look back at Rendez-vous Carnot 2023 !

20 November 2023 • industry of the future

The Rendez-vous Carnot 2023 took place in Lyon on 18 and 19 October. It was an opportunity for companies of all sizes and from all fields of activity to meet the major players in R&D to accelerate and bring to fruition their innovation projects.

The Rendez-vous Carnot 2023, with its rich and comprehensive offering and efficient organisation of pre-programmed meetings, was a real opportunity for companies to meet the right people to help them set up their innovation project, while optimising their time.

All industrial and technological sectors were represented: Aeronautics ♦ Agriculture – Agri-food ♦ Spatial planning ♦ Mobility ♦ Chemistry and Materials ♦ Low-carbon energy ♦ Environment ♦ Extractive industries ♦ Industry of the future ♦ Fashion and Luxury ♦ Health ♦ Sport and Wellness ♦ Digital/electronic technologies ♦ Sustainable and resilient cities…

The Carnot Télécom & Société numérique (TSN) institute was present at this annual event.

Europe’s largest business R&D show

Participants were able to talk to experts and representatives from France’s 39 Carnot institutes in a number of different areas.

The Start-up and Innovative SME area gave a selection of deeptech companies the opportunity to make themselves known, and to promote their products resulting from technological or software developments, for industrialisation, development or financing.

The investors/financiers area was a meeting place for start-ups and SMEs and banks, business angels and major groups, whose role is to finance companies, whatever their needs.

At this year’s event, project leaders were able to meet exhibitors presenting the offerings of more than 650 laboratories and innovation support structures. They were able to benefit from the R&D and technology offerings of the 39 Carnots, as well as other research laboratories, universities, engineering schools and research establishments, transfer structures, Contract Research Organisations (SRC) and Technology Resource Centres (CRT).

A new partnership signed

On this occasion, a partnership was signed between the Carnot Network and the CTI network, to work together to accelerate the transition from research to innovation
for industrial companies and thus contribute to the technological future of industry. Together they are committed to :

  • strengthen their links to mutually promote the originality and points of success of their models to their institutional supervisors, professional federations and relays in support of industry
  • promote the excellence of the research and development carried out in their respective institutions
  • encourage companies to enter into research partnerships with a Carnot Institute.

Partnerships rewarded with four Carnot prizes

The 2023 edition also enabled the Carnot Network to present the Carnot Partnership Research Awards, which highlight outstanding partnerships between
teams from the 39 Carnot Network institutes and companies. Four prizes were awarded by four personalities in four categories:
teams from the 39 Carnot Network institutes and companies. Four prizes were awarded by four personalities in four categories:

– Partnership research with an SME: Sylvain CAILLOL, CNRS research director at the Charles Gerhardt Institute (Carnot Chimie Balard Cirimat), in partnership with Sÿnia, the European leader in embossed adhesive labels. Sÿnia was looking to reduce its impact on the environment, and this partnership led to the development of a polyurethane formula with over 80% renewable carbon.

– Partnership led by a young researcher: Irène GONZALEZ SALGADO, from the UMR 792 TBI team at Carnot 3BCAR, for a project carried out with
NEREUS, which specialises in membrane processes used in the treatment of wastewater and industrial and agricultural effluents. This project has made it possible to develop-
a new process for producing nitrogen fertiliser from digestate, a by-product of biogas production through methanisation.

– Long-term partnership (3 years +): Laurent FULCHERI, Director of Research at the Centre PERSÉE at Mines Paris (Carnot M.I.N.E.S). After thirty years of research, this prize was awarded for a long-term collaboration with the American company Monolith for the production of “turquoise” hydrogen by pyrolysis of natural gas at high temperature, a low-energy-intensity process that enables the co-production of decarbonised hydrogen and solid carbon with high added value.

– Partnership research supporting the creation of a company: Maeva DORON, from the Person-Driven Systems Laboratory of the Carnot CEA LETI, in partnership with Diabeloop, a company specialising in the automated treatment of diabetes, and the CERITD association, founded by diabetologists. The project involved developing automated insulin delivery solutions for insulin-dependent people, enabling personalised management of diabetes and reducing the patient’s mental workload.

“The diversity of the projects rewarded by the Carnot Partnership Research Awards clearly shows the extent of the field covered by the Carnot Network in terms of research, development and innovation. Each in its own field, these four prizes illustrate the quality of the collaboration between Carnot and companies, and the concrete results that these partnerships can achieve”. Alexandre BOUNOUH, President of the Carnot Institutes Network.

Strate Design school, part of the Carnot TSN institute, honoured

To design the trophy awarded to the winners of the Carnot Partnership Research Awards, the Carnot Network called on Strate Design. To design the trophy, the school invited students to submit twenty designs, from which the winning object was chosen. Strate Design, which has campuses in Sèvres,
Lyon and Bangalore, is part of the Carnot TSN. It has set up a research centre to improve understanding of the societal issues linked to the third industrial revolution via two research laboratories: Exalt Design Lab and Robotics by Design Lab.

The projects of Strate Design students, who worked on the Strate x Carbone 4 partnership project, also faced the TSN Carnot Institute stand, in the form of panels covered with captivating photographs (see photos below).

With more than 8,000 face-to-face meetings, the 2023 edition of Rendez-vous Carnot was once again the ideal meeting place to respond to the challenges of all sectors of activity. This series of conferences and round tables brought together SMEs, ETIs and large groups: a real meeting place for all those involved in R&D and innovation, and a benchmark event in France for bringing together those involved in research and companies of all sizes (37% large groups and 35% start-ups).
